Rating: 4.5/5

This book is a mother’s worst nightmare. Abi Knight receives a phone call one night about her daughter being involved in an accident. Abi finds out that not only did Olivia fall off a bridge, but she is on life support because she’s pregnant. And the law in Washington requires the doctors to keep the baby alive till term. So Abi has to deal with the fact that her daughter will never wake up and she’ll be a grandmother in a few months.

What really frustrates Abi is the fact that she knows someone did this to Olivia, but the police think it’s only an accident. The bruises surrounding her body should indicate that there was foul play and the fact she fell off a bridge during the night should show that there is a possibility she was pushed off. The biggest mystery is Olivia didn’t have her charm bracelet, which Abi noticed because Olivia never takes it off. These clues only make Abi angrier about how the investigation into her daughter’s death seems to have stalled. So Abi decides to take matters into her own hands and search for answers.

Abi’s only child is dead, and she has no idea why. She started noticing a few things about Olivia that were alarming, but she only thought of it as being normal teenage behavior. Abi didn’t really know what was going on in her daughter’s life for the past six months. In the beginning of the novel, Olivia starts to question who her dad is after seeing a random girl at the University of Washington look exactly like her. Olivia wonders if they could be related and have the same father. Or maybe Olivia’s father isn’t really dead, and her mom has been lying to her all these years. So that starts the riff between Abi and Olivia. And it all goes down hill from there. We as readers were able to see Olivia’s life unfold because McDonald wrote her perspective into the novel. You get Olivia’s life up to her death, and Abi talks about what happens after the incident. It is a great mix of past and present, and it keeps the pace steady throughout the entire novel.

This book was explosive. It had twists and turns at the end of every chapter. You never knew what else could be thrown at Olivia and Abi. By the end, you’ll feel as if you ran a marathon because of Abi’s search for the truth. I could not get enough of it. Get ready for a shocking conclusion you won’t see coming.
